St Helen’s Catholic Primary School

TL;DR

St Helen’s Catholic Primary School over in Barnsley isn’t your average primary. They’re all about bringing kids up in a proper family atmosphere with plenty of love, lots of faith, and a big focus on letting everyone shine. In a nutshell, they care. You see it in the way the staff know every child by name, and the kids genuinely look out for each other. But for all the good stuff happening behind those doors, not enough local families knew about it. Word wasn’t getting out.

So that’s where I stepped in, armed with a stack of big ideas and a stubborn refusal to settle. We aimed to get St Helen’s on the map, make sure parents actually see what’s going on, and fill those registers till there’s not a spare seat in the house.

Understanding St. Helen’s: Our Client

St Helen’s isn’t just any old school in Barnsley. This place is the heart of its community, and you feel it the minute you walk through the gates. Their ethos is “one family, growing together in love and faith.” And it’s not just a nice line on the website either. You see it when a Year 2 gives their mate a hand tying shoelaces, or when Mrs Gagen’s rallying the troops for a charity cake sale. Everyone mucks in. No one left behind. It’s that proper Catholic ethos—warmth, respect, and a bit of hope for good measure.

St Helen’s has their “we love, we believe, we shine, we achieve” attitude running right through everything, from reception class up to Year 6 leavers waving goodbye.

Things were a bit too quiet on the admissions front. Local families just weren’t seeing the magic happening inside those walls. And at a time when every other school is shouting about their Ofsted report, St Helen’s needed to show Barnsley parents what made them special. Not just ticking “Catholic box”, but actually helping little ones grow up kind, curious, and chuffed to bits with what they can do.

So, that’s where we came in – time to roll up sleeves, dig into their story, and spread the word.

The Challenge: Standing Out Locally

Getting yourself noticed as a primary school in Barnsley isn’t exactly a walk in the park. There are a fair few schools in the area, all doing their best to shout the loudest. And honestly, it’s easy to get drowned out, especially if you’re not one for endless leaflets popping through letterboxes (which, let’s face it, usually end up under someone’s fridge magnet anyway).

Not enough local families were hearing about the school, never mind knowing what made it special. Loads of parents just went with whatever name they recognised first. No chance for St Helen’s to show off its big heart, brilliant staff, and the sort of community spirit that makes you look back on your time at school fondly.

Admissions can be a tough gig. If you’re the “quiet one,” families assume you’re not up to much. But with only so many hours in the day (and only so much change down the back of the school office sofa), they couldn’t throw money at the problem or hire a full-time marketer. Everything had to be smart, simple, and stretch as far as possible.

So, the mission was clear: Get St Helen’s out of the shadows, into the spotlight, without breaking the bank or losing that personal touch that makes it, well, St Helen’s.

Reyt Chuffed’s Approach: Digital-First & Community-Focused

We didn’t overcomplicate things. We started with what matters: putting people, not just pixels, at the heart of every campaign.

First up, we gave their social media a glow-up. Think weekly posts that weren’t just “Look at us, aren’t we great?”, we went for real stories—celebrating star pupils, teacher spotlights, and those cracking dress-up days that always put a smile on everyone’s faces. Plus, short videos and photos that actually show what school life’s like, muddy knees and all.

But we didn’t just stop at Facebook and Instagram. With a bit of paid ads action on Facebook and Google. All local, all aimed squarely at parents who wanted a school with a bit of heart.

Behind the scenes, we gave the website a tidy-up too. Tweaked the bits that always get ignored—like headers and calls-to-action. We made sure the school’s ethos and faith came through clear as day, right where mums and dads would see it.

What I’m proud of, though, is how we worked with the school’s own team. No sweeping in like we knew it all. We listened,  and we cracked on together. That’s how you get campaigns that feel honest and actually mean something to the people who see them.

It was all about living those school values: community, faith, a place where kids don’t just learn, they genuinely belong. That’s how you help a school stand out.

What We Achieved Together

When St Helen’s came to us, their Facebook was quieter than a library on a sunny Friday. Fast forward a few months and, well… let’s just say people started noticing.

  • Social media reach: Up by 135%
  • Likes: + 122%
  • Clicks shot up by 56%
  • + 17% more Facebook fans along the way

But here’s the real kicker: admissions. We hit 80% capacity for first-choice applicants and, honestly, the phone didn’t stop for weeks. There was a 30% oversubscription for second-choice spots, months before the deadline. If you’ve ever worked in schools, you’ll know: that’s the kind of oversubscription that makes headteachers do a little victory dance in the staffroom.

In Their Words

Here’s what Kerry Gagen, who runs the show at St Helen’s Catholic Primary, had to say about working with us:

“We were promised we would be ‘Reyt Chuffed’ with this service & it has not disappointed 🙂 Lexy & Paul are super helpful, they got to know us as a business & as people to understand our angle & were able to support us in the best possible way. Highly recommend anyone to get in touch & discuss all publicity and marketing needs.”

I’ll be honest, seeing feedback like this makes my day without fail. We don’t just want to tick boxes and send a nice report; we want people to feel understood and looked after. Kerry and her team care so much about the St Helen’s community, so the fact that they trusted us with their story says everything.

Start Your Own Success Story

If you’ve made it this far, you probably care about your school as much as we do about a good SEO Score. So, if you’re sitting there thinking, “It’d be right nice to see our admissions go up, or have more parents actually know what goes on behind our school gates,” why not give us a shout?

When it comes to local school marketing, we’re not here for empty promises or fancy buzzwords. We just want to help good schools like yours get the attention—and the pupils—they deserve. Real talk, real results.
